About EditVideo

EditVideo is a privacy first video toolbox that runs entirely in your browser. Thirty seven tools, fourteen languages, zero uploads. You open a page, drop in a video, and everything happens on the device in front of you. No account, no queue, no waiting for someone else's server to process your footage.

The problem we wanted to solve

Most online video editors work by uploading your footage to a server. Family videos, screen recordings, clips you never intended to share publicly. They sit in a processing queue, get handled somewhere else, and you have to trust that the copy is deleted afterwards. That arrangement is convenient for the people running the servers. It is not convenient for you.

We built EditVideo the other way around. The processing engines run inside your browser, so the video never needs to leave your device. There is no upload step because there is no upload server. Your footage stays yours from the moment you open the file to the moment you download the result, and the site has no way to see it at any point in between.

What a session actually looks like

You drag a file onto the page. The browser reads it locally and shows a preview. You set the options, click run, and the engine starts working on your machine: reading frames, applying the effect, encoding the result. The progress bar reflects real work, not a fake countdown. When it finishes, the download starts directly from your browser's memory.

Because the heavy lifting is local, a small clip often finishes in seconds. Larger jobs take longer, and the tools are honest about the limits on each page, including maximum file sizes and durations. Nothing runs in the background without telling you.

How it works under the hood

Three technologies do the heavy lifting. WebAssembly runs a full video engine inside the browser, the same class of software that powers desktop editors. WebCodecs and WebGPU let the browser talk directly to your graphics hardware for the AI tools. The result is desktop class editing speed without installing anything, on any recent browser.

The AI tools run real neural networks on your device. RIFE performs frame interpolation to turn 30fps footage into smooth 60fps. waifu2x upscales anime and illustrations. Whisper converts speech to text. MediaPipe segments people out of backgrounds. These are genuine models with real compute behind them, not marketing labels. When a page says AI, the model is downloaded to your device and you can watch it work in the browser's developer tools.

Each model carries honest limits, stated on the page: maximum durations, resolutions and the kinds of input each one is good at. A tool that is not built for pets says so in its FAQ. A tool that cannot do transparent export does not pretend otherwise.

What is inside

The toolbox covers four areas. Editing: trim, merge, crop, rotate, resize, split, fade, loop, reverse, speed, volume, filters, watermark and more. Converting: compression, format conversion, GIF in both directions, metadata editing. Capturing: frame grabs and screen recording. And the AI layer: 60fps interpolation, upscaling, captions and background removal.

Every page ships in fourteen languages. The translations are written by native speakers, not machine output pasted into place, and the guides explain the how and the why, not just which button to press. If a paragraph reads oddly in your language, that is a bug, and we want to hear about it.

Why it is free

The economics are simple. When the user's own device does the processing, hosting a tool costs a fraction of a server based competitor. The entire backend is a static site plus one small worker for the optional cloud transcription tier. No servers to rent per job means no need to charge, so the tools stay free without accounts, paywalls or advertising trackers.

That independence is also the point. A service that depends on uploads depends on keeping those uploads flowing through expensive infrastructure. A local tool has no such pressure, which is why the privacy promise here is structural, not aspirational.

The quality bar

Every tool on this site is verified end to end with real files before it ships. Filters are measured before they are added, so nothing lands that looks good but does nothing. Output formats are tested against real players. When a feature cannot be verified, it does not ship, even if the copy would look good in a list.

That bar is why some tools say less than competitors. Where another site promises everything, we would rather state exactly what works, what is slow, and what is outside the tool's scope. Honest limits age better than bold claims.

Who it is for

Creators who edit clips for social feeds. Teachers and trainers who trim lectures. Support teams who need quick screen recordings. People who record family moments and do not want those moments stored on a stranger's server. Anyone who prefers tools that respect the files they are handed.

What is next

More tools, deeper guides, and the same rule for each one: real functionality first, then copy that describes exactly what the tool does. The roadmap is driven by what people actually ask for. If you have a feature you want, write to hello@editvideo.tools and it goes on the list.

The name

EditVideo says what the site does and where it lives. The video part is the subject, and the edit part is the promise: a focused set of tools that get one job right at a time, instead of a bloated studio that does everything at 60 percent. The tools domain was chosen for the same reason: it signals what you are getting before you click.

Acknowledgments

EditVideo stands on open source shoulders. The video engine, the neural networks and the WebAssembly runtimes are all built by open communities and used under their licenses. We are grateful to the maintainers, and we keep the attribution honest in the technical documentation.
