How to put two videos side by side
Choose two videos, pick a layout and download the combined file. The tool composites both video streams into one frame in your browser: side by side gives a wide 1280 by 360 output with equal panels, top and bottom stacks them into 640 by 720, and the picture in picture layouts keep the first video full size with the second tucked into a corner. In side by side and stacked layouts both audio tracks play mixed at equal volume. In picture in picture, only the first video's audio is kept. The combined video is re-encoded, because compositing always requires it, and everything runs locally.
- 1. Choose two videosPick two clips, up to 300 MB and two minutes each. The first one is the left, top or main video depending on the layout.
- 2. Pick a layoutSide by side, top and bottom, or picture in picture with the inset in the bottom right or top left corner.
- 3. CombineClick the button and the two streams are composited into one frame. The audio tracks are mixed at equal volume, except in picture in picture which keeps the main audio.
- 4. DownloadSave the combined MP4. The longer video sets the length and the shorter one holds on its last frame.
- Tip: the longer video sets the length, and the shorter one freezes on its last frame. If one clip has no audio, the mix simply uses the other track.
- Side by side is the default for reaction videos and comparisons. Top and bottom fits vertical phone footage best.
- If the two clips drift out of sync, cut them to the same length first with the trimmer.
- Picture in picture keeps only the main video's audio. Use it when the inset clip is decorative.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is Split Screen Video really free?
Yes — completely free, with no hidden fees, no premium tier and no signup required. The tool runs entirely in your browser.
Do I need to install anything to use Split Screen Video?
No. Split Screen Video works directly in your browser. There is no software to install, no app to download and no plugin required.
Is my video uploaded to a server when I use Split Screen Video?
Never. All processing happens locally on your device. Your file never leaves your computer, which is why there is no upload wait and no privacy risk.
Which video formats does Split Screen Video support?
It accepts MP4, WebM, MOV and MKV — anything your browser can decode. Output is MP4 by default, playable on any device.
What happens to my file after processing?
Nothing is stored anywhere. Once you close the tab, everything is gone. We have no server, no storage and no access to your files.
Will my video have a watermark?
No — every download is 100% watermark-free. EditVideo never adds logos, branding or watermarks to your files.
How does the split screen tool work?
It composites both video streams into a single frame in your browser: each clip is scaled into its panel, then the panels are combined into one picture and re-encoded to MP4. The processing runs locally on your device.
Which video is on the left?
The first video you select is the left panel in side by side, the top panel in top and bottom, and the full-size main video in picture in picture.
How is the audio handled?
In side by side and top and bottom, both audio tracks are mixed at equal volume. In picture in picture, only the first video's audio is kept. If a clip has no audio track, the mix simply uses the other one.
Why does the shorter video freeze?
The combined video lasts as long as the longer clip. The shorter clip holds its last frame for the remaining time instead of disappearing, so both panels stay filled.
Will the video quality change?
The combined video is re-encoded, because compositing two streams always requires it. The output uses H.264 at a quality setting that stays visually close to the sources.
What output resolutions do I get?
Side by side outputs 1280 by 360, top and bottom outputs 640 by 720. Picture in picture keeps the main video at 640 by 360 with the inset scaled to one quarter.
Are there file limits?
Each video can be up to 300 MB and two minutes. Both are processed locally, so longer clips work too, but processing time grows with the length.
Can I put three or more videos together?
This tool combines two videos. For three or more, combine two first, download the result, then combine it with the next clip.
Is my footage uploaded anywhere?
No. Both videos are composited inside your browser and never leave your device. Once the page is loaded, the tool works offline.
What formats can I use?
Any two videos your browser plays: MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV and more. The output is always MP4.
Is the split screen tool free?
Yes, free with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. The processing runs on your hardware, so there is nothing to charge for.
