How to remove vocals from a video

Upload a video with a stereo audio track, click remove, and download a karaoke version: same picture, vocals largely cancelled. The tool splits the stereo track into its mid and side parts and keeps only the side. Vocals are usually mixed dead center, so they live in the mid part and get cancelled, while instruments panned to the sides stay. Results depend on the mix: songs with the singer centered and the band spread wide respond best. Everything runs locally in your browser.

  1. 1. Upload a video with stereo audioDrop a video up to 300 MB. The vocal removal needs a stereo audio track to work.
  2. 2. Remove vocalsClick the button. The audio track is split into mid and side, the mid part with the vocals is cancelled, and the rest is mixed back in.
  3. 3. Listen to the karaoke versionThe result keeps the instruments panned left and right. How much of the voice disappears depends on how the song was mixed.
  4. 4. DownloadSave the MP4. The picture is unchanged; only the audio track was processed.

  • Tip: the technique also weakens center-panned instruments like bass and kick drums. Songs with a centered singer and wide instrument spread work best.
  • Best case: live recordings and studio songs where the singer sits center and instruments spread wide. Worst case: mono mixes and heavy effects.
  • Bass and kick drums often sit center too, so they fade along with the voice. That is the price of the technique.
  • If the voice is barely reduced, the track is probably mono or the vocal is panned off-center. Try another song.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Vocal Remover really free?

Yes — completely free, with no hidden fees, no premium tier and no signup required. The tool runs entirely in your browser.

Do I need to install anything to use Vocal Remover?

No. Vocal Remover works directly in your browser. There is no software to install, no app to download and no plugin required.

Is my video uploaded to a server when I use Vocal Remover?

Never. All processing happens locally on your device. Your file never leaves your computer, which is why there is no upload wait and no privacy risk.

Which video formats does Vocal Remover support?

It accepts MP4, WebM, MOV and MKV — anything your browser can decode. Output is MP4 by default, playable on any device.

What happens to my file after processing?

Nothing is stored anywhere. Once you close the tab, everything is gone. We have no server, no storage and no access to your files.

Will my video have a watermark?

No — every download is 100% watermark-free. EditVideo never adds logos, branding or watermarks to your files.

How does the vocal remover work?

It uses classic stereo phase cancellation. The audio track is split into its mid part (what both channels share) and side part (what differs). Vocals are usually mixed dead center, so cancelling the mid removes most of the voice while instruments panned left and right stay.

Why does my video need stereo audio?

The technique cancels the center of the stereo field. A mono track has no stereo field, so there is nothing to separate. Mono audio passes through unchanged.

Will the instruments disappear too?

Instruments panned to the sides mostly stay. Center-panned elements like bass, kick drums and some synths are weakened along with the vocals. That is the known trade-off of phase cancellation.

Will the vocal be completely removed?

Usually most of it disappears, but rarely all of it. Reverb, backing vocals panned off-center and echoes can survive. Expect a strong reduction, not a perfect mute.

Does the video picture change?

No. For MP4 and MOV the video stream is copied byte for byte. Other formats are re-encoded to MP4 with the picture visually unchanged.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. Extraction, cancellation and mixing all run inside your browser. The file never leaves your device.

What formats can I use?

Any video your browser plays: MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV and more. The output is always MP4.

Is there a file limit?

Videos up to 300 MB are accepted. Processing runs locally, so longer videos work too, but they take more time.

Can I make a karaoke version for singing practice?

Yes, that is the main use case. Run a music video through the tool and you get the same video with the lead vocal mostly removed, ready to sing along.

Why is the result quieter?

The side signal is naturally quieter than the full mix because the center content is gone. The level is compensated to stay close, but some perceived loudness drop is normal.

Is the vocal remover free?

Yes, free with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. Processing runs on your hardware, so there is nothing to charge for.

What is the difference between this and AI vocal removal?

AI vocal separation trains a neural network to isolate the voice and can dig deeper into a mix, but it needs heavy models and usually a server. This tool uses classic phase cancellation: it runs instantly in your browser, keeps your video private, and works offline. For a clearly centered vocal it gets most of the way there; for complex mixes, AI separates cleaner.
